If you mean that what Peter hath proclaimed is to be accepted, I agree. We must accept the validity of this change, unless it violates a precept of Moral Law (which it does not). But this has nothing to do with the question of whether or not the Pope caved in. He obviously did, and that makes his action illegitimate, even if legally valid. It is illegitimate to alter the Work of the Holy Ghost in the Sacred Liturgy at the behest of infidels or heretics.

Secondly, the fact that the Pope's action is a valid act of law does not mean that we must receive or use the new prayer. We need only do what the law requires us to do. The change means that we should no longer demand to have the 1962 words for the 2008 words from a diocesan priest; and also that we should not oppose those laics who insist that the diocesan priest use the 2008 words.

However, we are not bound to use or receive the 2008 words ourselves because the law does not (and, in this particualr case, cannot) bind us to do so. We are perfectly free to continue reading the 1962 words to ourselves, whether in Latin or in the vernacular, as the priest intones the 2008 words. And I rather suspect that most people will not use the 2008 words, since Baronius Press has just printed tens of thousands of 1962 handmissals, and most faithful do not understand Latin. Most of those few faithful who attend Traditional Good Friday Prayers will simply continue using the 1962 words. Thank God for that.

P.K.T.P.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570809348314913884.post-50133696391736026132008-02-29T12:46:00.000-05:002008-02-29T12:46:00.000-05:00I am not confused. And we have
the fact that it is the Traditional teaching of the bride of Christ, his Holy Catholic Church. Two weeks later, he changed the prayer! Not a coincidence. He knows them well and has cordial relations with them. He has met them on several occaions and has exchanged gifts with them. Not a coincidence, Angelo. He caved in.

He caved in to the S.S.P.X but not on this. He granted their pre-condition for negotiations. It is well known that he wants a rapprochement with the Society. That's why he met with Bsp. Fellay and Fr. Schmidberger at the very beginning of his papacy. That was all they discussed. They made a demand and he granted it. It is true that he wanted to grant it, but he also had to get this past the liberals in the curia, no easy task. Yes, it was done to appease the S.S.P.X.

Try not to confuse what you want to believe and what is true.

P.K.T.P.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570809348314913884.post-34459298807149874432008-02-27T18:18:00.000-05:002008-02-27T18:18:00.000-05:00The Holy Father caved in to no one.Not even the SS...The Holy Father caved in to no one.
Not even the SSPX. The two chief rabbis of Palestine, who are well known to the Pope and have met with him both publicly and privately, issued a joint letter asking him to amend the 1962 text of the Good Friday Prayer. I note also that the two rabbis made public the existence of their letter but not its text. That way, the world would be able to see if the Pope would cave in and change the text. A fortnight later, he did exactly that.

The problem is not the text of the new prayer but the precedent His Holiness's action sets. Never before in the history of the Church has a Supreme Pontiff altered the Sacred Liturgy of the One True Church, which is the Work of the Holy Ghost, at the demand of two chief infidels, infidels who do not even believe that there is a Holy Ghost, infidels whose unholy Talmud caluminates our Lord and His Holy and Immaculate Mother--and all Christians--in ways too uncivilised and too unspeakable to print (cf. Gitten 57a and Sanhedrin, 106a, e.g.).

Should the Sacred Liturgy be changed at the suggestion of holy men and women after the use of long-standing precedents? Or should it be changed at the demand of heretics or infidels?

Ironically, most conservative rabbis (such as those in the Italian Jewish conference) have loudly rejected the new prayer. In trying to satisfy everyone, Benedict XVI has satisfied nobody. Nobody asked for this change except for those most of whom now reject it. The lesson is to leave well enough alone and heed the principle even included in the bad Vatican II Council: let there be no change to the liturgy unless the good of the Church genuinely necessitates it.

Let us pray that the Holy Father will not make this a precedent; let us pray that it will be an isolated exception, or even better, that the 1962 words will eventually be restored. We don't need Muslims and Hindus and Jews to tell us that we should change the text of our prayers. It's none of their business.

God bless Pope Benedict XVI. May God give unto him the wisdom he needs in his office of service.

P.K.T.P.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
